Will GTA 6 run at 60 FPS on PS5 and PS5 Pro? Here’s what experts say

One of the biggest questions surrounding GTA 6 has been whether the game will run at 60 FPS on current-generation consoles. While recent retailer leaks suggested Rockstar Games could introduce a performance mode, a new analysis from Digital Foundry indicates that players should not expect 60 FPS at launch.

According to the report, GTA 6 is likely to be capped at 30 FPS across consoles, including the more powerful PS5 Pro. The analysts explain that the limitation is not related to graphics performance but to the CPU. GTA 6 is expected to feature a massive open world filled with advanced AI, dense traffic, interactive NPCs and complex real-time simulations, all of which place significant demands on the processor.

Although the PS5 Pro offers a stronger GPU than the standard PS5, its CPU sees only modest improvements. As a result, experts believe the console lacks the processing power needed to deliver a stable 60 FPS experience. Instead, the upgraded hardware is expected to provide higher resolutions, improved ray tracing and better overall image quality while maintaining the same frame rate.

Digital Foundry also noted that Rockstar has traditionally prioritised world detail and visual fidelity over higher frame rates, as seen with Red Dead Redemption 2. A 40 FPS mode for players using 120Hz displays remains a possibility, but a full 60 FPS mode is considered unlikely. Rockstar Games has yet to officially confirm GTA 6’s performance targets, leaving fans waiting for more details.
