In the ongoing suo motu public interest litigation (PIL) concerning illegal structures in Goa, the Bombay High Court has come down heavily on village panchayats for failing to submit compliance reports as directed earlier.
Expressing strong displeasure, the High Court noted that several panchayats had not filed the required reports despite clear instructions issued on March 6, 2025. The court termed the lapse a serious dereliction of duty.
Taking a strict stance, the High Court has directed authorities to initiate an inquiry and take appropriate disciplinary action under service rules against the concerned panchayat secretaries responsible for the non-compliance.
The court’s directive underscores growing judicial scrutiny over illegal constructions in the state and the accountability of local bodies tasked with enforcement.
Further proceedings in the matter are expected as the court monitors compliance with its latest orders.
