Goa Legislative Assembly Winter Session Begins Today; Political Showdown Expected Ahead of 2027 Polls

The 8th Goa Legislative Assembly’s Winter Session is set to commence today, January 12, and will continue until January 16, spanning five days. Proceedings will begin each day at 11:30 am, with the session expected to witness intense political exchanges between the opposition and the ruling BJP-led alliance.

Despite being termed a winter session, the political temperature inside the House is likely to run high, as the opposition prepares to corner the government on a range of contentious issues. Key matters expected to be raised include the Rama Kankonkar attack, the Birch tragedy, demands for Special Status for Goa, land conversion cases, the Pooja Naik job scam, and ongoing taxi-related concerns.

On the other hand, the BJP and its allies are expected to defend their governance record by highlighting achievements such as the implementation of the Maje Ghar housing scheme, action taken following the Birch tragedy, the creation of the Kushavati district, and various developmental initiatives undertaken across the state.

With the 2027 Goa Assembly elections on the horizon, the Winter Session is being seen as a crucial platform for both sides to shape public perception, setting the stage for a political battle that extends well beyond the walls of the Assembly.
