PANJIM: In a distressing trend, the Directorate of Transport’s monthly report for September 2024 reveals that Goa recorded 195 road accidents across the small State, resulting in 18 fatalities and multiple injuries. The data stresses the need for stricter road safety measures and increased public awareness to address the rising accident rates.

According to the Directorate’s report, the accident breakdown included 15 fatal accidents, with North Goa recording the highest fatalities, with 10 fatal accidents compared to 5 in South Goa.
In terms of accidents that left 13 citizens with grievous injuries, six occurred in North Goa and 5 in South Goa. North Goa reported 13 minor accidents, while South Goa recorded 12, wherein 34 road users sustained simple injuries.
There were also 144 non-injury mishaps, 80 of which occurred in North Goa, and 64 in South Goa.
Two-wheelers prove once again to be the most dangerous mode of transport in Goa, with 10 riders (7 from North Goa and 3 from South Goa) and 6 pillion riders (4 from North Goa, 2 from South Goa), losing their lives in one month. The list of fatalities also included a four-wheeler driver and a pedestrian, both killed in North Goa, in separate incidents.
To enforce road safety regulations and improve adherence, the Transport Directorate issued a substantial 12,392 challans for various violations. This number reflects the State’s efforts to curb traffic offences and reduce risky behaviours on the road, though the accident statistics highlight ongoing challenges in road safety.
