PANJIM: On the backdrop of the death of a Pune tourist and pilot from Nepal during paragliding at Keri a few days back, the Department of Tourism on Friday ordered suspension of the operation of paragliding activities (motorized and non-motorized) throughout the state of Goa until further orders.

An order issued by Director of Tourism Kedar Naik said the department shall undertake a review of all the existing registrations issued under the Goa Registration of Tourist Trade Act, 1982, pertaining to paragliding activities throughout the state of Goa, to ensure compliance with the requisite safety standards.
All operators engaged in paragliding activities, motorized and non-motorized, have been asked to submit the prescribed documentation to the department for inspection.
“Any person, company, association, firm or any other entity failing to comply with this order or obstructing any person acting under its authority shall be liable to a fine of Rs 50,000 and subject to penal action under Section 223 of BNS 2023,” the order said.
The decision has come after a 27-year-old tourist from Maharashtra and a 26-year-old pilot from Nepal were killed in a paragliding mishap in North Goa’s Keri last Saturday.
The incident occurred when Shivani Dabale accompanied by pilot Suman Nepali took off from a cliff at Keri plateau and plunged into a ravine.
