PANJIM: With 1,500 to 1800 engineering students getting ready annually, the Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Wednesday said that Goa is turning into an educational hub.
Parrikar also went on to say that the Nobel Prize Series India-2018 would be useful in the development of scientific approach to the development of science by the youth, and the ability to think and develop their thoughts on science.
“There are four engineering colleges in Goa. Apart from this there are six polytechnic organisations. National Institute of Technology (NIT), BITS Pilani and other educational institutions as well as National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) is in Goa. Science education in Goa is in a nutritional environment,” Parrikar said addressing the media on the occasion of curtain raiser programme for the Nobel Prize Series-2018 Goa Event.
“Today a very clean thought process is very important; I see confusion many times in the thinking process illustrating issues on various matters including various serious matters that are being discussed in Goa at this stage. I also see that gap in thinking process and gap in understanding certain issues and this comes out of probably a less scientific way of thinking,” he said.
He further said that the event aims to bring together Nobel Laureates and other experts in the field of science which will help to inculcate sense of scientific temperament and stimulate creative thinking in the student community, besides to promote science education in general and will benefit students, teachers, scholars in the State of Goa as they would get a First-hand opportunity to interact with the Nobel Laureates.
“The event also includes Nobel exhibition to be flown in from Sweden including Indian exhibition showcasing the exemplary scientific work done by Indian scientists. The exhibition will remain open for public from February 1 to 26, 2018. Six Nobel Laureates are expected to be present for this event which combines exhibition, dialogue, roundtables and their interactions with students, teachers etc,” the chief minister said.
When asked on why Goan students do not opt for pure sciences, Parrikar said: “I don’t think the number in Goa is that small but, I do agree that the number is not up to the expectations that are because pure science does not pay. Many a time people are thinking that the derivative part of the science stream that is IT, the engineering or the medicine that is where you can make a career but remember one thing that unless there is growth of pure science derivative branches which are the supporting or the actual implementation branches cannot have required strength.”
