MARGAO: Goan Seamen Association of India celebrated Seafarers Day in Varca on Saturday. This day is dedicated to seafarers and GSAI felicitated 20 retired seamen from the State thanking them for their selfless service on the high sea.
Benaulim MLA Caetano (Caitu) Silva appealed to the seafarers to come under one banner of GSAI and help the community. Varca parish priest Fr Candido Fernandes also highlighted the hard work of the seafarers.
GSAI President Dixon Vaz requested the government to create a seafarers’ cell to safeguard the seafarers’ rights as lately many have been laid off from work, not paid wages and lost life at sea and no justice is given to them. The seafarers’ cell can help seafarers to fight for their rights, he said.
He also appealed to the government to look into the Kamakshi Forex case and help the investors to at least get their principal back. Frank Viegas highlighted the issues solved by GSAI.
