On Wednesday, Menino Fernandes, who rings the bell at the chapel every evening, was knocked down by a youngster on a two-wheeler. He was taken by a 108 ambulance to Hospicio Hospital, Margao, examined, and then rushed to GMC after reports showed that he had suffered internal bleeding, besides injuries to his leg and eye.
Locals recalled that three months ago, Chinchinim resident Berta Fernandes was also injured in a hit-and-run incident that left her unconscious. They stated that in this case, the police had rushed to Hospicio for a statement. However, in Menino’s case, although he is conscious, police have cited procedural issues and delayed in getting more information. Incidentally, Berta and Menino are related to each other.
The locals are incensed that the streetlights near St Sebastian Chapel have still not been repaired despite accidents occurring. They pointed out that other people have also been injured in accidents in that area. They have demanding that the accused be nabbed, that the authorities fix the streetlights and that a traffic officer be deputed to the area.
When Herald visited the Cuncolim police station as late as 10 pm, officials had very little information on Menino’s case.
