PANJIM: Feeling offended that TCP Minister Vijai Sardessai gives more importance to Opinion Poll than Liberation Day, Goa Suraksha Manch (GSM) has demanded an apology for the same from the minister.
“We condemn his statement that Opinion Poll is bigger than Goa Liberation Day. It is disrespecting to freedom fighters and Goa’s freedom struggle,” GSM chief Subhash Velingkar told reporters at a press conference on Friday.
The regional outfit has demanded an apology from the minister failing which they have threatened to display back flags at Republic Day function hosted by the government.
Sardessai had recently said that people should know that the Opinion Poll was a bigger achievement than liberation as the historic referendum helped Goa to retain its own identity.
The GSM has also objected to the demand for erecting a statue of Dr Jack Sequeira at Porvorim assembly complex.
Velingkar said that an additional statue would only lessen the importance to the statue of Goa’s first chief minister Dayanand Bandodkar.
Sardesai had called for the defeat of politicos who oppose the installation of Sequeira’s statue at the complex and stated it was a matter of time before the statue is installed.
