CALANGUTE: The GTDC demolition squad on Thursday demolished illegal structures in its property at Baga.
The demolition squad demolished the structures with the help of manual labourers and heavy machinery. The demolished structures included a bar and restaurant, huts, etc, in the government acquired land at Baga.
The occupants of the illegal structures were caught on the wrong foot early Thursday morning when a large demolition squad armed with the needed tools arrived at the site and started demolishing the huts. Heavy machinery was also pressed into service to complete the demolition of the illegal structures. However, a few occupants themselves demolished their huts upon seeing the demolition squad, while others watched helplessly the demolition of their structures.
While GTDC Managing Director Sanjay Prabhu Chodnekar, who oversaw the demolition operations, claimed that the illegal structures have been removed after serving prior notice to the occupants to make way for the developmental project underway at the site, the occupants of the illegal structures disagreed with Chodnekar’s statement and claimed they were not even informed of the development.
