The IMD has also warned that heat wave conditions are likely in isolated pockets of Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, East Uttar Pradesh, and northern Rajasthan. Authorities have advised people to stay hydrated, avoid direct sunlight between 12 pm and 4 pm, use protective gear like hats or umbrellas, and ensure children or pets are not left inside parked vehicles.

Delhi under orange alert as temperatures soar

Delhi has been placed under an orange alert for Sunday and a yellow alert for Monday as the capital continues to reel under extreme heat. Several regions, including North, West, South, and Central Delhi, are already facing heat wave conditions.

The IMD noted that Sunday marked the third consecutive day of heat wave conditions in the capital, which are expected to continue into the next day. Minimum temperatures are likely to stay between 25°C and 27°C, while maximum temperatures may reach 43°C to 45°C. Light rain and thunderstorms are also possible in some areas on April 27.

Mercury crosses 40°C in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan

The scorching conditions are not limited to Delhi. In Uttar Pradesh, Lucknow recorded a high of 42.5°C, which is 3.4°C above normal. Rajasthan is also under severe heat stress, with a yellow alert issued for several districts including Bikaner, Jaisalmer, Barmer, Jodhpur, and Jaipur.

Meanwhile, an orange alert has been issued for parts of Haryana such as Gurugram, Faridabad, Palwal, Mewat, Rewari, and Ambala, where temperatures continue to rise sharply.

Dry winds and strong sun driving heat wave

Meteorologists have attributed the ongoing heat wave to dry northwesterly winds combined with strong solar radiation, a common pattern during early summer in northwest India. These conditions are expected to intensify heat stress across affected regions before a gradual easing in the coming days.
