Heavy rainfall on Saturday led to severe waterlogging in Sanguem, disrupting traffic after the main road in front of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj statue near the bus stand was submerged.
The flooding caused inconvenience to commuters and motorists as rainwater accumulated on the busy stretch, slowing the movement of vehicles.
Goa Forward Party leader Meshu D’Costa blamed the situation on the alleged failure of the Public Works Department (PWD) to clean roadside gutters at several locations in Sanguem before the onset of the monsoon.
According to D’Costa, blocked drains prevented rainwater from flowing freely, resulting in waterlogging on the road.
He also raised concerns over the alleged absence of a PWD supervisor at the site during the ongoing work. D’Costa claimed that only labourers were present, with no supervising official to oversee or guide the operations.
Questioning the planning and execution of the drainage maintenance work, he alleged that the lack of proper supervision has contributed to recurring flooding problems in the town during the monsoon season.
Residents have urged the authorities to improve drainage maintenance and ensure effective monitoring of public works to prevent similar incidents and minimise disruption during heavy rainfall.
