MARGAO: Margao Municipal Council chairperson Dr Babita Angle on Tuesday met members of the Hotel Owners Association and the Indian Medical Association and discussed the issue of managing the garbage generated by them.
The Hotel Owners Association offered their total support to the MMC plan to segregate their waste but the IMA members demanded that a facility be provided for which they were willing to pay. Another meeting will be held after the code of conduct ends.
Dr Babita expressed happiness with the positive attitude of the hoteliers and added that they have been directed to connect to the sewerage system to avoid blockages which result in wastewater spilling on the roads. Dr Sudhir Shet and Dr Suraj Prabhudessai said they were willing to pay for a facility to handle the bio-medical waste generated by them and asked the council to take the initiative to prepare this facility.
The bio-medical waste treatment facility conceptualised by the government will take at least another two years to be ready and since then the councillors have been advised to make interim arrangements at a meeting held by government officials in Panjim recently to which the councillors were not party.
“We were not informed at all about this meeting and being a doctor I would definitely like to know what exactly are the government plans,” said Dr Babita and admitted that disposal of saline containers, gloves and things like that are a little difficult in present times.
“I shall convene a meeting with the members of the Pollution Control Board, Goa Solid Waste Management Corporation and doctors after the code of conduct is over to discuss thoroughly the matter concerning bio medical waste,” she assured.
