Hundreds of devotees from Goa and across the country gathered on Monday, November 24, for the first novena Mass of St Francis Xavier at Old Goa. The revered saint’s incorrupt relics, preserved for centuries at the Basilica of Bom Jesus, continue to draw pilgrims from around the world, with decennial expositions offering a rare opportunity for public veneration.
The first novena Mass was led by Fr Myron Barretto, who called on the faithful to pray for prisoners while also reflecting on the metaphorical “prisons” people confine themselves to in daily life. Novena Masses will continue to be held both in the morning and evening, with Herald TV broadcasting the 5 pm Konkani Mass live on its YouTube channel.

Pilgrims from various states shared their spiritual experiences. Santoshi Naik from Goregaon, Maharashtra, said she and her son have been attending the novenas since 2000. Sonia Fernandes of Mangalore expressed her joy at being in Goa for the first novena, noting that her short holiday had unexpectedly turned into a deeply enriching spiritual journey. She hopes to have the opportunity to view the sacred relics during her stay.
Anthony Mary and her family from Karnataka, long-time devotees, said they have been visiting Old Goa for over a decade and have witnessed several miracles attributed to St Francis Xavier. They described the choir’s music during Mass as “su-madhura gaiana,” a Kannada phrase appreciating the melodious singing.
Mufeed Bhanu, a resident of Mangalore and a devout follower of the Quran, shared his profound respect for St Francis Xavier and Christ. He said he had always wished to visit the church but hesitated earlier, unsure of his reception. This year, he decided to make the journey and was moved by the warmth and inclusivity shown by the congregation.
