This husband-wife duo had planned to make it to the Margao civic body five years ago, but tasted only part success.
This time, there was no stopping for former councilor Sadanand Naik and his wife, sitting councilor Babita Naik from entering the civic body together. Both Sadanand and Babita posted handsome victories in wards 6 and 7 respectively, defeating the BJP candidates, including sitting BJP councilor Raju Shirodkar.
Both Sadanand and Babita later told newsmen that the people have elected them due to the development done. “We did a lot of development in the two wards. Though I was defeated in the last elections, I did not stop work in the ward. Babita also ushered in a lot of development during the last five years”, Sadanand said.
He said that the victory only proves that the people have voted for development and have not fallen prey to false propaganda.
While Sadanand and Babita created a record of sorts, similar attempt by two other couples met with failures. Sitting councilor Livramenta Barretto and her husband Camilo Barretto, who had contested from wards 4 and 9 respectively, bite the dust in the hustings.
Similarly, Agnelo Furtado and his wife Nacimenta, who had contested from wards 3 and 2 respectively, also faced defeats.
