PANJIM: The government order for partial closure of the ‘unsafe’ Dona Paula jetty was issued on Saturday with Imagine Panjim Smart City Development Ltd to take up repair works. The order issued by North Collector Levinson Martins is effective from November 5 and the City Corporation has been asked to ensure relocation of the vendors until the work is complete.
“Part B (portion of the entrance of the jetty located in the water) will remain closed for public access. It is being closed due to structural instability and danger of collapse. The repair works is to be undertaken by Imagine Panjim,” an officer said.
The decision was taken at a meeting with officials from the Ports Administration, City Corporation, PWD, Imagine Panjim Smart City Development Corporation, etc earlier this month, after a site inspection. Imagine Panjim, formed to implement Smart City in Panjim, had sought immediate attention of the dilapidated jetty. PWD was also asked to conduct an audit of the jetty.
Major concerns of the jetty, such as its current condition, parts that need to be revamped, relocation of vendors from the jetty and most importantly as to why the jetty was not closed earlier were raised during the meetings after IPSCDL had written to the Collector for immediate closure and what were the constrains.
