India Maintains Oil Flow as Iran Tightens Control Over Strait of Hormuz Amid Rising Middle East Tensions

Amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, Iran has intensified its control over the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, disrupting global fuel supplies and rattling energy markets following reported US-Israeli strikes on February 28.

Maritime data indicates that nearly 60 per cent of commodity-carrying vessels transiting the crucial shipping lane are either originating from Iran or headed towards it, highlighting Tehran’s growing influence over one of the world’s most important energy corridors.

Despite the heightened tensions and partial blockade, India has continued to maintain a strong maritime presence in the region. The country has emerged as one of the top operators navigating the strait, with at least eight Indian vessels successfully passing through the volatile zone since the conflict began.

Among them were two major LPG carriers—BW TYR and BW ELM—which safely transported approximately 94,000 tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) through the high-risk corridor.

In addition, four Indian-flagged LPG tankers completed their journeys without incident. Between March 26 and 28, Pine Gas and Jag Vasant delivered a combined 92,612 tonnes of LPG to India. Earlier, MT Shivalik and MT Nanda Devi transported approximately 92,712 tonnes of LPG, arriving at Mundra Port on March 16 and Kandla Port on March 17, respectively.

The continued movement of Indian vessels through the Strait of Hormuz underscores the country’s efforts to secure energy supplies amid global uncertainty. While the situation remains volatile, India’s ability to sustain shipments highlights both operational resilience and the critical importance of the route for global energy trade.
