PANJIM: Stating that the two incidents of loaded heavy vehicles falling into pits dug for sewerage line work are not acceptable, Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) Mayor Rohit Monserrate has written to the Smart City administration requesting it to set guidelines for the contractors, who have undertaken works around the State’s capital city and said that it is high time the CCP initiate action against the contractors.
The Mayor said, “I have written to the Smart City officials asking them to inform contractors carrying out works to be careful. This is the second incident of a vehicle falling into a pit which is not acceptable.”

“It is high time to take action against the contractors. We will have a meeting with the Smart City officials and will make sure they take action against the contractors,” Mayor said adding that the CCP is not the authority to take action against the erring contractors.
“Even after the contractors applied for sealing of the roads and erected barricades but some people moved the barricades and travelled on the closed roads,” he complained.
The CCP and the contractors, who are carrying out Smart City works in the capital city, are under fire as there have been two consecutive incidents of loaded heavy vehicles falling into pits dug for sewerage line work. The first incident occurred when a truck laden with laterite stones fell into a half complete pit at St Inez while the second incident was reported on Friday wherein a tanker fell into a similar pit at Tonca. The CCP is facing a time crunch as the deadline for completing and handing over the smart city works nears.
