Sleuths of the Income Tax department on Tuesday descended at the Margao Municipal building to verify the challans of tax deducted of contractors and income tax returns of Municipal employees.
A team of IT sleuths verified the documents throughout the day and the operation concluded only at around 4.30 in the evening.
The sleuths later seized a number of files for inspection and verification.
Margao Municipal Chairperson Sushila Naik denied that the IT sleuths have raided the Civic body, but said that the officials only came to verify certain documents pertaining to the TDS challans of contractors and returns filed by the employees.
The IT officials made their presence felt in the Accounts Section in the morning and scanned through files and documents pertaining to the last three years. They were assisted by the Municipal Accounts and Taxation Officer Mr Elekar and others.
The presence of the IT officials raised many an eyebrow and a word went out that the Municipality has been raided by the Income tax department.
However, one of the IT official maintained that there was no raid, but only perusal of documents of the challans paid into the bank and the contractors bills.
An IT official remarked that security personnel would have accompanied them in the municipal building and the entire building would have been closed for the visitors in the event of a raid in the Municipality.
