PONDA: The residents of Bethora have demanded the construction of a flyover at the accident-prone Bethora Main Junction on the widened Curti-Bethora-Borim bypass road.
According to them, the 3.5-km stretch from Curti-Bethora-Borim bypass on Margao-Belagavi route is undergoing rapid development and nearing completion. Hot mix carpeting is complete, but signboards, underpass, and construction of a flyover are pending.
The residents said that the widened road has witnessed increased traffic, particularly heavy vehicles, speeding on the highway towards Margao.
They fear that the prevailing chaotic situation could lead to accidents and have demanded the construction of a flyover.
The locals, including commuters and industrial workers, said that they have been demanding a flyover at Bethora junction for the past ten years.
They complained that the industrial estate workers also commute along the Bethora junction which causes traffic congestion during working hours. The same road leads to Bethora Nirankala Codar Panchayat and Dabal Kirlapal Panchayat.
Chandrakant Samant, Bethora Nirankal Conshem Kodar panch member, emphasised the urgent need for a flyover at the junction.
Samant said since the past ten years they have been demanding a flyover at Bethora main junction. There is an industrial estate at Bethora due to which there is chaos during working hours. Everyone wants to cross the road and this could lead to accidents. He said the government should immediately construct a flyover at the junction.
He said that around seven fatalities were reported on this highway stretch.
According to NH officials, the Bethora-Borim Bypass is a state highway that was widened using funds from the Central Reserve Fund (CRF). After completing the construction, the stretch will be declared a national highway.and a flyover will be constructed at the spot.
