Locals worried about cutting of trees in Assagao

MAPUSA: Locals are concerned about the manner in which trees are being cut and no attempt is being made to save the environment and its biodiversity at Assagao. During the weekend, cutting of trees was witnessed in Assagao, which the Goa Green Brigade (GGB) has strongly condemned.
Two months ago, the Goa Green Brigade had written to the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests at Panjim asking him to revoke the permission granted for cutting of trees.
The brigade members stated that Assagao is one of the richest biodiversity hotspots of Goa where trees allow the birds, insects, reptiles, butterflies and other microorganisms to thrive and locals fear that any attempt to destroy this green cover will cause serious irreparable damage
“It is high time the forest department wakes up because the villagers are not going to take this anymore. I appeal to the forest department to please take cognizance as there have been several instances of tree cutting reported by the residents of Assagao,” said GGB, while adding that it’s shocked that a large number of trees have been allowed to be butchered in Assagao.
