CANACONA: A family escaped unhurt when fire destroyed property in a house at Loliem late Monday night.
Canacona Fire Services was alerted of a fire in the house of Narayan Pagi at Kajalkar-Loliem at 11.10 pm on Monday night.
By the time a fire brigade reached the site, nearly 20 kms away, the entire house was engulfed in flames. The firemen along with locals managed to extinguish the fire, but considerable property was destroyed in the mishap.
“There were a minimum of three people, including a pregnant woman and a child, when the fire broke out in the house. All occupants ran to safety when the fire broke out,” Canacona Fire Officer Francisco Mendes told Herald.
The fire services has estimated the losses at Rs 3 lakh and claimed to have saved property worth Rs 7 lakh. The cause of fire is under investigation and although a short circuit is suspected, fire officials have sought the help of the electricity department to investigate the possibility of short circuit as a likely cause of the fire.
On Tuesday, a fire brigade extinguished a fire which had spread to a patch of grassland at Gowal-Khola. Some cashew trees are also reported to have been destroyed in the fire.
The fire services prevented the fire from spreading to about seven houses in the vicinity.
