Tensions escalated in Maina-Curtorim today as angry villagers gheraoed the Sarpanch and the Panchayat General Secretary, accusing them of favouring an upcoming multi-housing project despite strong community opposition.
Residents said they had already voiced their objections during the previous gram sabha, where concerns were raised not only about the proposed housing project but also about two other similar developments in the pipeline. Villagers alleged that despite clear and repeated opposition, panchayat officials appeared to be moving ahead with procedures that could benefit the project’s promoters.
Coming together in protest, the villagers demanded that the Sarpanch and Panchayat Secretary immediately meet the Director of Panchayats and take steps to halt the project. They warned that if the officials fail to intervene, they should resign on moral grounds.
The primary concern, villagers said, is that the large-scale project would drastically alter the village’s natural topography and contribute to depletion of local resources. They fear the development will strain water availability, increase population density, and disrupt the rural character of the village.
The protest highlights growing unrest in several Goan villages where rapid construction projects have sparked debates over environmental impact, sustainability, and the preservation of traditional village life.
