…mamlatdar says it is just a passing phenomenon

Sanguem Mamlatdar Amol Gaonkar, who was entrusted with the investigation of the sudden tremor, opined that the tremor-like effect which was felt in Sanguem and neighbouring villages on January 7 and 8 has nothing to do with quake and it is just a passing phenomenon.
It may be recalled that the tremors on two consecutive days were followed with a loud noise and the people in the locality had witnessed a shaking effect at many places. Incidentally, no damages to livestock were reported from any part of tremor-affected areas.
The areas which felt the tremor-like effect included Sanguem town and villages of Valkini, Bhati, Sanvordem and Uguem.
The Meteorology Department had however ruled out any quake in the vicinity of the areas and opined the effect could be due to some blasting operations in the locality.
Speaking to Herald, Sanguem Mamlatdar Gaonkar opined that due to large-scale mining activities in the region since the last several decades, a situation perhaps might have been created leading to loosening of soil below the ground. “There is nothing to worry,” claimed Gaonkar.
“There has been no high intensity blasting operations undertaken in the area on the two days by any mine owners, both basalt and iron ore,” added Gaonkar.
Earlier, the citizens had alleged use of high intensity blasting operations by a private company who had bought a hillock in the vicinity of Uguem. Mamlatdar Gaonkar however brushed aside the allegations claiming there has been no use of such high intensity blasting operations as per the investigation conducted by his office.
