Margao citizens urge MMC chairperson to convene meeting

During the ‘Battle for Margao’ debate which Herald conducted along with HCN at the BPS hall in Margao on Tuesday, June 23rd 2015, the chairperson of the Margao Municipal Corporation, Arthur D’Silva promised the citizens a special meeting on the first day of July to discuss the garbage issue that has been plaguing the city. Following the Margao declaration, resolutions passed at the Battle for Margao debate; citizens of Margao have written to the chairperson of Margao Municipal Council (MMC), Arthur D’Silva urging the council to immediately convene a special meeting as promised.
Advocate Rajeev Gomes who has formed the group ‘Margao United’ and was a panellist on the round table wrote to his fellow panellist, D’Silva and stated that this was furtherance to the promise made to the citizens of Margao by D’Silva at the debate held on June 23, to convene the meeting on July 1 at the municipal hall.
Adv Gomes on behalf of the citizens asked that the total of eight agenda points be fixed for the meeting.
Door to Door collection of segregated waste, segregation of waste at source, transport of segregated waste for disposal, constitution of waste management zones, constitution of waste management committees construction of composting units for multi dwelling units, enforcement of concession agreement between Fomento Green and MMC and for the temporary capping or trenching of the old dump to prevent flow of leachate.
“I regret to inform you that any lapse on your part in convening the meeting will be viewed very seriously by the citizens, as the citizens anticipate the outbreak of an epidemic due to the utter failure of proper waste disposal in the city” said Adv Gomes in his letter.
“Kindly inform me in advance, so that the other conscientious citizens of Margao and Fatorda can be informed in time, to facilitate attendance at the meeting” added Adv Gomes.
