MARGAO: Margao Municipal daily wage garbage workers are up in arms against what they term as discrimination in respect of payment of daily wage.
They have demanded that the civic body ensure parity of pay scale on par with their counterparts employed for road works.
They have contended that though they are working in inhospitable conditions on collection of garbage, they are being paid less wages compared to the workers employed on road works.
A delegation of the daily waste garbage workers led by Former MMC Chairperson Savio Coutinho called on the Municipal Chairperson Dayanand Deulkar and Chief Officer Y B Tawde and impressed upon them the need to bring the garbage workers on par with the road workers vis-a-vis pay scales.
It was drawn to the notice of the Municipal Chairperson that while the garbage workers working on daily basis are paid a daily wage of Rs 221, daily wage workers employed for road works are paid Rs 300 per day.
“This disparity should be immediately done away with. The garbage workers work in sometimes inhuman conditions and they should not be discriminated against by the Civic body,” Coutinho maintained.
When contacted, the MMC Chairperson said the Municipality has written to the Director of Municipal Administration seeking clarification on the disparity in wage structure.
He said the Civic body would make the necessary changes after receiving notification from the DMA’s office. “We also feel that the wage structure goes against the daily wage garbage workers. We have written to the DMA to rectify the anomaly”, he added.
