MARGAO: Ahead of the Tuesday’s council meeting, the Margao Municipality on Monday zeroed in on the land acquired for the proposed non-conventional energy park and handicraft mall for accommodating the furniture stalls during the Holy Spirit feast fair.
The site was inspected by a municipal team comprising of Chairperson Arthur D’Silva, Chief Officer Deepali Naik, Municipal Engineer Diniz and market inspector Mohan Arlekar this evening.
After the inspection, the MMC Chairperson said the team has approved the acquired land for shifting the furniture fair from alongside the road during the feast fair. “The entire land will be cleaned up during the next two days to accommodate the furniture stalls”, he said.
Chief Officer Deepali Naik said that the team has finalised the acquired land for the shifting of the furniture stalls during the feast fair. “If the furniture stall traders object to the site, the Municipality will not be able to help them out. But, we will not allow the furniture stalls to be set up along the road sides or on the footpaths”, she warned, adding that the decision will be placed before the Council meeting scheduled on Tuesday.
Replying to a question, the Chief Officer said it is now high time that the Civic body puts a system in place and avoid traffic congestion during the fair.
To take care of sanitation, she said the sanitary inspector has been instructed to make arrangements for 15 toilets during the fair this year. “We will distribute pamphlets to members of the public to use the facilities during their visit to the fair”, she said.
The MMC has called a special meeting on Tuesday to discuss the issue of shifting the feast fair from the road side on grounds of traffic congestion. This follows a meeting called by district Collector, South N D Agrawal following a representation made by City based NGOs and activists, calling for an interaction with the stakeholders and to work out a solution to the annual issue.
