MARGAO: Closed Circuit TV cameras might have come in handy for the Margao traffic cops to track down on traffic violators by sitting right in their offices. Sadly, delay by the police department to replace a non-functioning UPS system has virtually thrown the entire concept out of gear at the Margao traffic cell.
In fact, the system has been adversely hit in the last 20 days for want of an UPS after the breakdown of the system. The result being that the traffic cops cannot track down on the traffic violators for want of storage of the video footage for want of the UPS.
Herald inquiries have revealed that though the system has developed a snag around 20 days ago, no replacement of the UPS has been forthcoming from the police department. This despite the fact that the CCTV concept had helped the traffic cops brining all violators under its scanner.
“We have already moved the file for the replacement of the UPS system. We are awaiting necessary instructions from the police higher ups”, remarked an official in the know.
Incidentally, top traffic officials had contended that the CCTVs will help even the local police keep a track on vehicles moving around the city after committing crimes. Sources, however, now say that the absence of the UPS has come in the way of the storage of the video footage.
Incidentally, the traffic cell has finally returned the computer system to the district Collector after receiving one from the police department. When the CCTV cameras were first installed in the city, they were monitored on a computer system made available by the office of the district Collector. However, after the Collector called for the return of the system, the traffic cell knocked the doors of the police authorities to make available a computer to operate the CCTV system.
