Altogether 109 personalities have been decorated with the Padma awards — 27 getting the Padma Bhushan and 77 Padma Shri. They include 12 from abroad, seven getting the Padma Bhushan and five Padma Shri. The list includes only three getting the honour posthmously.
Bollywood film personalities Shabana Azmi, Mira Nair and Dharmendra Deol from the cinema category and painter Jatin Das are among 27 bagging the Padma Bhushan award, while the Padma Shri award has gone to 77, including sitarist Shahid Parvez Khan and playright Satish Alekar of Maharashtra. Environmentalist Dr Kartikeya V Sarabhai is the lone Padma Shri awardee from
Industrialists Arun Hastimal Firodi and Dr Swati A Piramal, Mumbai’s noted chartered accountant Yezdi Hirji Malegam, homeopath Dr Mukesh Batra, who founded in 1982 the world’s largest homeopathy corporate, are among the Padma Shri winners.
SPORTS: Eight have been awarded the Padma Shri, including Hindi commentator Ravi Chaturvedi of Delhi. Sportsmen figuring in the list are: Limba Ram and Devendra Jhajrija of Rajasthan for archery and paralympics respectively, Syed Mohd Arif of Andhra Pradesh for badminton, Zafar Iqbal of UP for hockey, Jhulan Goswami of West Bengal in women’s hockey, Ajeet Bajaj of Delhi for skiing and Prabhakar Vaidya of Maharahtra for physical education.
The awards are conferred by the President of India at a function held at Rashtrapati Bhawan sometime around March-April.
