One of the greatest literary figures of Goa, Reginaldo Fernandes was born on June 14, 1914 in Siolim. He remains one of the most celebrated figures in Konkani literature. Popularly known as Romanxincho Patxai (The King of Roman Konkani), he was among Goa’s most prolific and accomplished Roman-script Konkani writers. Despite his immense contribution to Konkani literature, his legacy remains relatively unfamiliar to the younger generation, highlighting the need for greater recognition of his life and works through research, academic studies, and literary appreciation. Besides being an outstanding writer, he was also a gifted musician and composer whose songs enriched Goa’s cultural heritage. Reginald authored more than 200 novels and novelettes, making an unparalleled contribution to the growth of Konkani literature. His writing is distinguished by vivid descriptions of people and places, presented in a simple, accessible style that closely mirrors everyday spoken language. This unique approach enabled readers to easily connect with his stories and characters. His concise, engaging dialogues further enhanced the appeal of his works, making them both relatable and enjoyable to read.

On this occasion of the birth anniversary of Reginald Fernandes, Dalgado Konknni Akademi will release the reprinted editions of Reginald Fernandes’ novels ‘Arabeska’ and ‘Zorzorro’ on June 19 at 4 pm at St Anthony’s Church Hall, Siolim. One of his earliest titles began with ‘Arabesca’, representing the letter A, while ‘Zorzoro’ marked the letter Z. As the Manager of New Age Printers, Fr Myron Jeson Barreto, was inspired by the positive response to continue making the literary works of Reginaldo Fernandes available to the public, “The reprinted editions of ‘Arabeska’ and ‘Zorzorro’ are being published by Dalgado Konknni Akademi as part of its commitment to preserving and promoting Konkani literature. Earlier this year, New Age Printers published Reginaldo Fernandes’ novel ‘Foler Rakhnno’, which received wide appreciation from readers and enjoyed encouraging sales. Now, as President of Dalgado Konknni Akademi. I am pleased and delighted to publish more of his novels. Reginaldo Fernandes remains a true inspiration to young writers. His contribution to Konkani literature is immense, and his works deserve to be cherished, preserved, and passed on to future generations,” says Fr Myron, who was instrumental in publishing the first reprint of Reginald Fernandes after many decades. He further says, “It is our responsibility to promote the literary heritage created by our eminent writers who are no longer with us. Though they have departed from this world, their literary legacy continues to live on through their writings. By republishing and promoting these valuable works, we ensure that the richness of Konkani literature remains alive and relevant for present and future generations.” ‘Arabeska’ and ‘Zorzorro’ are edited into one book by noted Konkani writer Fausto Da Costa, who also edited the reprint, ‘Foler Rakhnno’ which was released in March this year. “The two novels selected for this volume represent the first and last letters of the Roman alphabet—‘Arabeska’ from A and ‘Zorzorro’ from Z. Reginald wrote novels with titles beginning with almost every letter from A to Z, covering 24 alphabets. The exceptions were Q and W, which are not used in Konkani and the omission of H may be attributed to its use in Konkani primarily for aspirated sounds. Among the three novels whose titles began with ‘A’ and the three that began with ‘Z’, ‘Arabeska’ and ‘Zorzorro’ were chosen for specific reasons. ‘Arabeska’ is not merely a work of fiction but a remarkable imaginative creation that transcends conventional storytelling. It belongs to the genre of fantastic fiction that was immensely popular in English literature during that period and often achieved record-breaking sales. Publishing this novel serves as a testament to the ability of Konkani writers of that era to create works of similar imagination and literary merit,” explains Fausto. “Zorzorro’, on the other hand, was selected because it is rooted in a real-life story and offers a vivid portrayal of Goan society of its time. Despite their contrasting themes, both novels contain an equal measure of suspense and intrigue. The narratives of both novels are highly engaging. Reginald’s vivid descriptions of places, periods, and situations, combined with his distinctive style of narration and dialogue, make these works compelling and enjoyable reads,” he adds. The Birth anniversary celebrations in Siolim will include the release of the book in the presence of chief guest, Michael Lobo, Chairman of GSIDC Ltd, Salvador Fernandes, son of Reginaldo Fernandes, and DKA President Fr Myron Jeson Barreto. A group of singers comprising Anthony San, Luci Pereira, Akishia Fernandes, Anora Pereira, and Joyd Antao will present songs composed by Reginaldo Fernandes. As many of Reginald Fernandes’ original publications became difficult to access over time, New Age Printers undertook the important task of reprinting his novels, ensuring that future generations can rediscover and appreciate the literary legacy of one of Goa’s finest writers.
