PANJIM: On an average, there were 44.75 deaths a day in May, as Goa ended the month with 1481 persons dying from COVID-19. While 75 was the highest number of deaths reported on May 11, the last day of the month, May 31, reported the lowest number of deaths at 24.

The month also saw a huge increase in cases, as there were 64,594 positive cases reported over the 31 days of May, which averages to 2083.67 cases per day. The highest number of cases in a single day was reported on May 17 when the tally touched 4008 new cases.
In comparison, in the month of April there were 33,013 cases where the positivity rate had crossed 50 per cent towards the end of the month.
While the daily positivity rate in Goa was at 44.75 per cent on the last day of April, it had dropped to 20.04 per cent on the last day of May.
Across the month of May, there were 73,375 recoveries reported which averages to 2366.93 recoveries per day.
On May 31, the lowest number of cases in the month was reported, at 602 cases with the total number of active cases dropping to 12,763. It had nearly touched 32,900 in the second week of May. Urban Health Centre Margao (1072) and Primary Health Centre Ponda (760) are the only two health Centres above 750 cases.
The total number of deaths in the State since the beginning of the pandemic has now reached 2659.
Of the 24 deaths reported on Monday, 16 deaths took place at Goa Medical College (GMC), 4 at the South Goa District Hospital (SGDH), 1 was brought dead to Hospicio and 3 deaths took place at private hospitals in North Goa (Manipal Hospital and Redkar Hospital). The youngest to succumb to the infection was a 40-year-old man from Marcel.
The Directorate of Health Services (DHS) reported that only five of those who died had taken one dose of the vaccine while the remaining had not taken any.
On Monday, 500 persons were placed under home isolation, 102 patients were hospitalised and 106 persons were discharged. In all 1825 persons recovered on Monday with the recovery rate now reaching 90.10 per cent. On Monday 3004 samples were tested.
