Insanity, mental illness, family problems and love affairs top the reasons for causes of suicides in the State since 2006.     
A reply tabled in the Monsoon Session of the Goa Legislative Assembly informs that in 2006 a total number of 273 suicides were recorded out of which 50 were due to mental illness, 40 have been attributed to family problems and 10 to love affairs.    
In 2007 the figure for mental illness suicides dropped to 42, in 2008 it rose a bit to 44 and then again escalated to 51 in 2009. In 2010 till June the statistics is placed at 24.
Suicides attributed to family problems were 40 in 2006, dropped to 37 in 2007, further came down to 28 in 2008, rose again to 47 in 2009 and till June 2010 the figure is placed at 18.
The State recorded 10 suicides due to love affairs in 2006. In 2007 the figure rose to 13.
 It further rose to 17 in 2008, then dropped to 10 in 2009 and in 2010 uptill June there have been nine suicides due to this cause.
There were total 268 suicides in 2007, 287 in 2008, 278 in 2009 and uptill June 2010 the figure is placed at 156.    
The number of registered cases of women committing suicide within seven years of marriage were recorded as follows: 15 in 2006, again 15 in 2007, 26 in 2008, 18 in 2009 and uptill June 2010 the figure is 7. Since 2006, 20 cases are being investigated for dowry deaths.
