PANJIM: A day after the act of nine legislators, who rode to the Vidhan Sabha complex without helmets, caused much furore and drew flak, Calangute MLA Michael Lobo apologised on behalf of the bike-enthusiasts and insisted that RTO should challan them all, as per the law.
“It was wrong on our part to ride on the highway to the Assembly Complex without helmets,” Lobo said, adding that they had not realised the implications of their so called fun trip.
Lobo said that even though he was only a pillion rider Friday, “The fact remains that even I should have worn a helmet as per the rules. We represent the youth and we need to send positive messages and not wrong signals to the youth of Goa,” he said.
Lobo, in a frank interaction with Herald on Saturday said that he was apologising to the people of Goa on behalf of the eight legislators for breaking the law. “No minister or MLA is above the law and we must be fined by the traffic police and transport department for the violations,” Lobo reiterated.
Calangute MLA also said that the MLAs must pay the fine when challaned (fined).
It is learnt that Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar also admonished the MLAs, five of whom are from the BJP, for their irresponsible behaviour. The incident was severely criticised by senior politicians and is also likely to echo in the Goa Assembly when it re-assembles on Monday.
