VASCO: Illegal land filling opposite Khapreshwar temple at Belabaim, Vasco was inspected by Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida and Mormugao deputy collector, On Thursday.
On the occasion, the MLA said that the land filling done by the South Western Railway is without permission from local governing bodies and the land filling of a nullah would lead to flooding during monsoon.

Almeida questioned Vasco Railway Station Master G Ramdas as to who permitted the railways to fill the land. Although Ramdas maintained that he is from other section, he informed that the work is being done by the engineering section of the Railways.
The MLA also inspected a spot near Belabaim area, where he learnt that the South Western Railways is planning to erect an iron arc at the entrance of the Belabaim road.
Commenting on these issues, Almeida told reporters that the Railways is trying to assert and capture Belabaim and surrounding area of the Vasco Railway station.
He claimed said that no permission was taken by the Railways to undertake land filling or to erect arc.
Later, Maxi Pereira, attorney for Mormugao Comunidade, said that the area where the land filling has taken place comes under Comunidade. He said that he Railways have not taken permission from the Comunidade for land filling. “Filling of nullah will lead to flooding in low lying areas,” he opined.
Meanwhile, Almeida informed that KTCL is working on a voluntary retirement scheme. “We will have a meeting with the chief minister. We have to spend around Rs 50 lakh on the staff who are medically unfit to work. So this VRS scheme will help them to leave the job gracefully. We are discussing the proposal with the workers union and it may take a few months to get it implemented,” Almeida added.
