MAPUSA: Verla-Canca panchayat in presence of Calangute MLA Michael Lobo demolished two roadside shops in the village on Thursday.
Sarpanch Milton Marques said that the demolished shops had encroached on the road setback. Due to the encroachment on the parking space, customers were parking vehicles on road causing traffic congestion.
Marques also informed that all the illegal shops on the stretch between Parra and Mapusa via Canca will be demolished. However, legal shops would be allowed to make provision for parking and footpath without being demolished. “All the illegal shops, including a fish stall and a chicken centre, at Canca circle will also be demolished, but those run by the locals will be spared,” he said.
“The fish stall and chicken centre are unhygienic causing inconvenience to people,” he said.
He informed that the area cleared of the illegal shops would be demarcated as parking space as per the order of North Collector.
Meanwhile, Calangute MLA Michael Lobo informed that panchayats are undertaking widening of road by providing parking space and footpath. “While undertaking this work, all the illegal shops on roadside from Parra to Mapusa will be demolished,” he said.
