VASCO: Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) chairperson, chief officer, municipal inspectors and councillors conducted an inspection of the Vasco market area to check the illegal encroachments carried out by the vendors.

Chairperson and chief officer warned the vendors to clear the encroachments by Saturday failing to which their licences will be cancelled.
MMC has rolled up its sleeves to clear the illegal encroachments from the Vasco market which is being done openly by the vendors. Keeping the commodities on the road from both the sides create problems for the people to walk and make purchases. The recent waterlogging in the vegetable market and the complaining of the lack of basic facilities in the market by some vendors triggered this inspection by the MMC.
On Friday morning, it came as a surprise to the MMC chairperson, chief officer during the inspection that at the entrance of the vegetable market where usually encroachments are seen was cleared.
It is considered that a word of caution might have passed among the vendors. Later, MMC officials also observed that rampant illegal concrete constructions, encroachment on the drains have taken place which has led to the water clogging in the market area.
Later, speaking to the media, Chairperson Nandadeep Raut informed that there were complaints from the people that they face inconvenience in the market and there was also a water clogging two days ago. Therefore, to identify the issue, we had carried out an inspection.
Raut said that those who were found encroaching on the footpaths, drains etc have been asked to clear by Saturday, failing to, their licences will be cancelled and the commodities will be seized by the MMC.
When asked what if the vendors continue to encroach after a week’s time, to which the chairperson revealed that strict instructions has been given to the municipal inspectors to report such illegalities and if the inspectors do not perform their duties then the chief officer will take action on the inspectors.
