VASCO: The Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) has threatened to terminate the contract of Chemtrol Agencies if it fails to treat the garbage which is mounting at the garbage treatment plant (GTP) at Headland Sada within a period of 15 days.
This was decided at a special meeting convened by the MMC on Wednesday evening.
For the past several months, garbage has been mounting at the GTP as the machinery to recycle garbage was not functioning. This had led to a stench in the locality of Headland Sada, angering residents in the area.
Speaking to media persons, MMC Chairperson Sunita Asgoankar stated that the council has set a deadline of 15 days to the officials of Chemtrol Agencies to recycle the accumulated garbage, failing which their contract would be terminated.
Councillor Manish Arolkar stated that the machinery is old and is not functioning properly, due to which Chemtrol Agencies cannot recycle the mounting garbage.
However, the officials of Chemtrol Agencies, who were present at the meeting, blamed the rains for the accumulation of garbage. Without giving a time period to recycle the garbage, the officials added that the treatment and recycling of garbage will be undertaken only after obtaining a report from the consultant and the contractor.
Responding to allegations by some councillors that the government was not providing funds to the municipality, Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida stated that his government had already allotted Rs 4 crore to buy compactors and garbage trucks.
“I will urge the government to allot more funds to take care of the garbage treatment plant at Headland Sada,” he said.
