VASCO: After preventing use of plastic bags during the Saptah and Ganesh festivals, the Mormugao Municipal Council plans to do the same during the upcoming Diwali festival.
The MMC will have the theme of “Burst Hunger Not Crackers,” this Diwali.
The Council intends to go for an eco-friendly Diwali by introducing earthen lamps, decorative diyas and allowing crackers having specific label “No Child labor was employed in manufacturing these fireworks”.
The Council also intends to promote an eco-friendly Rangoli without using any dyes and instead using natural organic colours and also by using newer petals and dry leaves for the Rangoli.
“Carry your own cloth bag while shopping for Diwali” campaign will be launched in a big way in Vasco soon. Single use plastic will be totally banned for this Diwali festival.
To discourage the use of plastic bags by shopkeepers and other vendors for handing out the purchased goods, Municipal Council had distributed clothe bags during the Saptah and Ganesh festivals.
The municipalities in Goa are working hard to become garbage-free, of which plastic waste forms a major part. And ever since the Swachh Bharat was launched, Goa is striving to become a garbage-free State.
