Vasco: Some things never change. Last year, the students studying in the Mormugao Municipal High School located on the first floor of the administrative building of the school faced severe hardships as the rooftop of the school started leaking. This year too, the helpless school management are left with no option but to use buckets and take to cleaning the corridors thrice in a day to keep the corridors and classroom area dry.
This is not as new issue. The school management complain to the Mormugao Municipality, however apart from voicing their concern and providing assurances, the situation never improves.
The municipal authorities claim that a year ago the council obtained an administrative approval for undertaking repairs/renovations of the nunicipal building. Once it was done the problem would be solved. Recently before the rains, the council had announced they would shift the school temporarily to the Mata School premises in Baina so as to undertake repair/renovation works. However nothing happened and now the work will be undertaken after the monsoons.
In terms of taking preventive measures, MMC have offered some help to the school management by supplying a few labourers for covering the rooftop with tarpaulin sheets. However the work could not be undertaken as the decision was taken late and now they are waiting for a dry spell to cover the rooftop with tarpaulin sheet. Meanwhile, due to a delay in undertaking repairs on time, the leaking wooden rooftop has not only become weak but there are high possibilities that the same might collapse anytime and that can be very dangerous to the students.
