Uganda’s army chief, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has drawn global attention after making an unusual set of demands directed at Turkey. In a series of posts, the General called for a payment of $1 billion, citing Uganda’s long-standing military role in Somalia, where its forces have been involved in countering extremist groups for years.
Alongside the financial demand, Kainerugaba added a personal request, stating that Turkey should provide “the most beautiful woman” in the country to be his wife. While the statement appeared partly humorous, it has triggered criticism for being inappropriate and sexist.
He further warned that failure to meet these demands could result in diplomatic consequences, including the closure of Turkey’s embassy in Kampala and restrictions on Turkish operations. The remarks have raised concerns about the nature of Uganda’s diplomatic messaging.
Kainerugaba, son of President Yoweri Museveni, has previously made headlines for controversial statements on social media. In 2022, he offered 100 cows in exchange for marrying Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, a move that drew widespread criticism.
Despite the backlash, there has been no official response from Turkish authorities. It also remains unclear whether the statements reflect Uganda’s official stance or the personal views of the General.
