MARGAO: South Goa MP Narendra Sawaikar has written to the Minister for Environment and Forests seeking development of Dudhsagar Falls which is a major tourist destination in the district.
The MP has informed that Gangaram Thako Lambor, Collem-Sigao Sarpanch has also made a representation to him seeking special permission to develop and nurture Eco-Tourism in the areas coming under the Dudhsagar Falls jurisdiction.
“Dudhsagar Falls is one of the major tourist attractions in Goa. Over 2/3rd of the households in Collem are dependent on the tourism activity centered on Dudhsagar Falls. Besides 1/4th of the households in the panchayat area are dependent on the tourism-related activities such as plying of jeeps to the waterfall and back. Besides, other tourism-related businesses such as restaurant, shops etc. are also being run on small scale” Sawaikar informed.
Revealing his course of travel to the areas passing through the Mahavir Sanctuary, he observed that there is no systematic facility for the tourists given the fact that the road is in a very bad shape.
MP demanded that the restrictions on number of vehicles which has been regulated to 225 per day be removed. Due to the above restriction, a vehicle owner can make only 13 trips per month which has resulted into loss in business.
The MP has urged the minister to direct the concerned officials to grant necessary permission for anti-skid pavers, construction of ramps, bailey bridge etc. and other facilities suggested, in the larger public interest and with regards to tourism in Goa.
