Municipal panel opposes field work for office staff

The Margao unit of the Goa Municipal Employees Association has threatened to strike work if the Civic body drafts office employees, including UDCs for field duty.
At an executive Committee meeting held today, the Association has further demanded that the Civic body implement various benefits to the employees, including increment and leave salary after completion of 12 years of work.
Association General Secretary Anil Shirodkar informed that the executive members have sought an appointment with the Chief officer Prasanna Acharya to discuss the pressing issues, including the order issued for an UDC for field work.
“We will ask the Chief Officer to immediately withdraw the order asking the UDC to go on the field and carry inspections in the market. There is no need for an UDC to be drafted for such a duty when there are market inspectors to do the job”, Shirodkar said, adding that the Association has no objection if the work of inspections is allotted to any of the market inspectors.
Replying to a question, he said the Chief Minister has given them a patient hearing on the grievances and assured to meet the employees in the Civic body in a day or two.
When it was pointed out to him that the order drafting an UDC for field work had the backing of a Council resolution, Shirodkar begged to differ, saying that the resolution did not specifically referred to any UDC for field work.
Incidentally, the Goa Municipal Employees Association had a round of confrontation with the MMC Chairperson Savio Coutinho last year on the question of implementing the bio-metric reader to check employees attendance, before Chief Minister Digambar Kamat intervened an amicably resolved the row over the bio-metric reader.
