PANJIM: North Goa police has processed the externment of two rowdies, including a panch member accused of assaulting Calangute Legislator Michael Lobo last December, to the north district magistrate alleging they are a threat to the citizens.
Cleofas Fernandes alias Kempha and Yusuf Shaikh alias Rama Naik are the two persons recommended for externment from the north district. Sources said the north police requested Fernandes’ externment for the second time after his deadly attack on Lobo near Arpora market junction on December 4, 2014. He had surrendered about five days after escaping police action, and subsequently arrested by Anjuna police.
“His externment proceedings were then quashed by the north district. But considering the recent attempted murder charge in addition to about 15 cognizable and non-cognizable cases registered against him at different police stations, police recommended his name for the second time for externment,” a senior police officer told Herald.
Rama Naik (58) was arrested this March for torching a rickshaw at Porvorim. He was, however, released on bail after which Porvorim police said he has been threatening residents who demanded his arrest then.
During the externment period, an accused cannot enter the city or district limits for a minimum period of six months.
“Its a long procedure. The persons are issued notices to submit their version, police furnish the entire criminal background to make their case strong,” the source added.
North Goa Collector Nila Mohanan had ordered externment of history sheeter Sandip Pujari for two years from north jurisdiction, in January this year.
