PONDA: Industries Minister Mahadev Naik has called for the implementation of strict laws of foreign countries to curb garbage dumping and promote cleanliness.
He lamented that despite Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for ‘Swachh Bharat’, people were still not maintaining cleanliness in their areas. He stated that people were dumping garbage on the highways and other public places, which gave the area a shabby look and invited health problems. He added that India has no strict laws to punish offenders and that foreign countries had already fulfilled their ‘Swachh Bharat’ mission.
Naik was speaking at the 62nd All India Cooperative Week celebrated by Thrift Cooperative Association Ltd, Ponda, in association with Goa Engineering College and Employees Cooperative Credit Society, Farmagudi, based on theme ‘Swachh Bharat.
Stating that there is no fear of the law in our country, Naik called upon health officers to act against those who dump garbage in residential areas and teachers to take the lead in educating students about cleanliness. He also urged Goans to educate visitors about cleanliness before providing accommodation to them.
Ponda MLA Lavoo Mamledar claimed that political games were hindering garbage collection and disposal in Ponda and that some areas of the taluka were neglected completely.
