BICHOLIM: Narayan Relekar and Dayanand Boryekar were elected as chairperson and deputy chairperson respectively of Sanquelim Municipal Council (SMC).
It may be recalled that the election to the 11-member council was held on May 12 and on Tuesday, the election to elect chairman and deputy chairman was held in the chairman’s office under the supervision of Returning Officer Sabaji Shetye.
Five councillors including Narayan Relekar, Damu Ghadi, Upendra Karpe, Nisha Pokle and Dharmesh Saglani had filed their nominations. However, four councillors withdrew from the fray and Relekar was declared elected unopposed as chairperson of SMC.
Two councillors, Dayanand Boryekar and Dharmesh Saglani, were in the fray for the deputy chairperson’s post. However, when the elections were conducted, Boryekar polled six votes while Saglani secured five votes.
Later, Sanquelim MLA Dr Pramod Sawant said the BJP panel has won the election and will look into the matters of Sanquelim. “We have won and we will look into pending projects in the city including sewage treatment plant and other projects,” he said.
“We thank the people of Sanquelim for showing their support during the elections and there will be all-round development in Sanquelim,” he added.
Speaking to media after the elections, Relekar said his priority will be cleanliness in the city and will also work to maintain gutters and solve garbage problems.
“All the wards will be given equal priority and with the help of the government we will try to complete the pending projects in Sanquelim.”
The members of the newly formed six-member BJP’s SMC panel includes Relekar, Boryekar, Upendra Karpe, Nisha Pokle, Dishita Naik and Damodar Ghadi. Other councillors include Kunda Madkar, Rashmi Desai, Vibha Desai, Riyaaz Khan and Dharmesh Saglani.
