MARGAO: On the occasion of World Water Day, the locals of Navelim village launched an initiative to create awareness about the high pollution levels of River Sal and its tributaries and called upon all the authorities concerned to take adequate action to save the River.
The locals who had gathered near the Navelim-Mandopa bridge on Wednesday, showed the poor condition of the River Sal tributary and lamented that once upon a time, farmers earned their livelihood from the fields nearby, but are now suffering as they have lost their source of income and self-sustenance.
Bento Da Silva, a local villager, alleged that the Railways wash the bogies of trains and that this wastewater is dumped into the tributary of River Sal.
Da Silva called upon Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) to carry out an inspection of these alleged actions of the Railways, the condition of the river and to also direct the Railways to send this wastewater directly to the Navelim Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP).
Other locals also claimed that the Town and Country Planning (TCP) should look into permissions granted to real estate projects, wherein the tributary has been incorrectly marked as a nullah, so as to ensure they don’t have to keep big setbacks near their properties.
