The diary has come under the scanner of the authorities on the question of hygiene with the power and water supply departments disconnecting supply to the dairy. One of the three brothers, Francis Pereira told the media that the authorities have disconnected their power and water supply leaving them in a tight spot.
Navelim Civic and Consumer Forum secretary Joseph Vaz said that action has been initiated against the dairy based on a reference from the office of the Chief Minister. “The authorities could have given the dairy a time frame to rectify the discrepancies, if any. Disconnecting the power and water supply since the last one month was certainly not a
solution to the problem”, Joseph said.
With the Forum and local residents taking up cudgels for the beleaguered Pereira brothers facing a bleak future, Navelim MLA and Fisheries Minister Avertano Furtado convened a meeting with the Collector and the health and other authorities, besides the Pereira brothers and the Forum representatives in his office this evening. The complainant was also present at the meeting.
After the closed-door meeting, Avertano told the media that the electricity department took the decision to cut-off power to the dairy following a complaint of health hazard lodged against the unit. “Since the Pereira brothers have now agreed to comply with the requirements, they have been told to file an appeal with the panchayat officials”, Avertano said.
When the media drew his attention that the authorities had turned a blind eye in
the past over health hazard posed by rampant discharge of sewage by housing complexes, he said such
complaints are normally attended by the departments concerned.
