VASCO: It was on December 19, 1961, that the Indian Armed Forces, under a daring, audacious and a swift operation, liberated Goa from the Portuguese and the deposed Governor General of Portugal in India Manuel Antonio Vassallo E-Silva surrendered to the then Chief of Army Staff General Pran Nath Thapar.
The war memorial at INS Gomantak was built in memory of seven young gallant sailors and other personnel who laid down their lives on in “Operation Vijay” undertaken by the Indian Navy for liberation of Anjadiv Island and territories of Goa, Daman and Diu from the Portuguese rule.
Every year on 19th December the officers and men of Goa Naval Area pay their homage to the martyrs on behalf of a grateful nation. A guard is paraded and wreath laid on the occasion at the War Memorial.
This year the wreath was laid by Rear Admiral Puneet K Bahl, VSM the Flag Officer Commanding Goa Naval Area in presence of all commanding officers and heads of establishments.
