PANJIM: An Indian Navy submarine collided with the fishing vessel ‘Marthoma’, approximately 70 nautical miles northwest of Goa.

While 11 crew members were rescued shortly after the incident, search operations are ongoing for
the remaining two missing members. The collision occurred as the submarine was transiting along the west coast. In response, the Navy immediately launched a coordinated Search and Rescue
(SAR) operation.
“Search and Rescue efforts were immediately launched by the Indian Navy with six ships and aircraft. 11 crew have been rescued so far,” Captain Mehul Karnik, Chief PRO Defence, Public Relations Office (MoD),
Mumbai, said.
The Navy intensified efforts by deploying additional assets, including those from the Indian Coast Guard. The operation is being coordinated by the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Mumbai.
A statement from the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said:
“Coordinated Search and Rescue efforts for the remaining two crew members of Marthoma, which reportedly collided with an Indian Naval submarine PM 21 on November 21, 2024, about 70 nm northwest of Goa, are in progress. Additional assets, including those from the Coast Guard, have been diverted to the area to augment the efforts.”
The cause of the collision is currently under investigation. The Navy has not disclosed further details regarding the condition of the missing crew members or the damage sustained by the vessels involved.
