PANJIM: Days after O Heraldo highlighted how road accident casualties due to Smart City work did not get compensation due to policy loopholes, Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho declared Rs 10 lakh as compensation for the family of Emidio Monteiro, who died last week after falling off his two-wheeler on a stretch that had been dug up in Ribander. He was the fourth person to lose his life due to shoddy Smart City work.
Godinho, who chaired the State Road Safety Council meeting at Porvorim on Thursday, also hinted at enhancing the financial assistance from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 10 lakh as per The Goa State Interim Compensation to Road Accident Victims Scheme, 2015, in case an accident victim loses his life.
“The government gives a compensation of Rs 2 lakh on a simple application in case of a death. I suggested that if the death resulted from Smart City works, the compensation should be Rs 10 lakh,” the
minister said.
